Designing an Accessible Travel Product for Inclusive Tourism

Designing an Accessible Travel Product for Inclusive Tourism

Designing an Accessible Travel Product for Inclusive Tourism

about.

This semester project focused on improving accessibility in Danish tourism for people with physical disabilities. The project addressed how a digital product could support tourists with mobility impairments when experiencing Copenhagen.

The outcome was a concept for a mobile app that gathers and communicates accessibility information in one place, helping users plan and navigate their stay with fewer barriers.

challenge.

Even though Denmark has committed to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, many tourists with physical impairments still face practical barriers when traveling. The core challenge was not a lack of destinations, but a lack of clear, reliable, and usable information about accessibility.

Users often struggle to understand whether places truly fit their needs, which makes planning stressful and limits their freedom. The challenge was to design a product that supports equal access without treating users differently or lowering expectations.

result.

The solution was a mobile-first product concept that centralizes accessibility information for tourists with mobility impairments. The app allows users to define their specific needs and then presents relevant attractions, experiences, and routes that match those needs.

From a product design perspective, the solution focused on:

  • Personalization based on real user constraints, not assumptions

  • Clear and structured accessibility data (ramps, elevators, entrances, toilets)

  • Reducing cognitive load during planning and navigation

  • Designing for dignity by offering the same experiences as everyone else

The product was designed as a planning and navigation tool that supports independence, confidence, and inclusion throughout the entire travel journey.
